New round of MSTIP
funding decisions
Since it's inception in 1986, the Major Streets
Transportation Improvement Program (MSTIP) has
funneled $555 million in countywide property taxes to provide 111
road improvement projects that have significantly improved the
quality of the transportation system. These projects have created a
solid base infrastructure that Washington County residents and
businesses rely on everyday. It's important to note that they are
starting a new round of the program known as MSTIP 3d.
Provide your comments on the next round of funding:

Regional
Transportation Options Proposal
Metro
is seeking comments on their updated Regional Travel Options (RTO)
Strategic Plan that determines the regional allocation of Federal
Congestion Mitigation Air Quality funds, which are used to promote
programs that improve air quality by reducing car traffic.
Historically,
Transportation Management Associations, such as the WTA, have
received dedicated funds to promote transportation options in their
service area. The current plan recommends these dedicated funds be
reallocated into a competitive grant process.

Highway Corridor Plan (TVCP)

The goal is to avoid this.

The
TVCP
is looking for ways to improve the livability of TV Highway.
During their initial meeting in January, the Group redefined the
road as an "arterial" which recognizes that the road has
evolved to include shorter distance local trips and increased
bicycle and pedestrian traffic. The project team is starting to
develop solutions which could include: additional auto lanes,
completing the sidewalk system, augmenting the bicycle
infrastructure, improving transit access, adding street lighting
and creating turn lanes at busy intersections. A draft solution
should be available to the public in April.
An Open House event has also been scheduled for May 8, 2012
location and time TBA.

Proposed TriMet Changes
Comment
period closes Friday March 2nd
Submit comments at:
As you may already know, with a $17M budget deficit,
TriMet is considering several important changes to their service
offerings.
The changes include the following:
1.
End of Free Rail Zone in downtown Portland
The Free Rail Zone began in 1975 to promote ridership; ending it
will generate $2.7M.
2.
Eliminate zones
There will be a flat rate which is the direction peer agencies
are moving and sets TriMet up to move to an electronic fare system.
3.
Fare Increase
Increase in fare except for honored citizens. This, along with the
elimination of zones, will generate $6.0M
4.
Service Changes
This includes running the MAX Red Line from the Airport to the
11th Avenue Station rather than to the Beaverton TC during non-peak
times. The savings of this is $0.9M.
We've highlighted the bus routes that fall within Washington County
that are affected to make sure you can stay up to date. For the
full list of proposed changes please visit TriMet's Website.

The PDX Bike Show - this March
Organized
by Washington County's own: Aaron and Andrea McBride
Come check out one of the biggest and best Bicycle Expo
Shows in Portland! On March 24th and 25th the Portland Expo Center
will be packed with lots of vendors, active transportation
non-profits and bicycle enthusiasts like yourself!
This show is the brainchild of two Washington County
residents-so make sure you show your support! Here at the WTA, we
were lucky to grab a moment of Aaron McBride, one of the
co-founders, time for a quick interview.
"The ultimate goal is to grow bicycling and the
bicycle friendly culture in our area. Being
that we live in a very damp part of the country,
the goal was to have an event that would be a Spring kickoff to the
cycling season and an opportunity to get folks engaged and thinking
about their upcoming spring, summer, fall rides and commutes."
